Smoking amongst Pakistani Youth - A product of frustration or peer pressure?

I believe that the Pakistani youth is very uniform. Be it good or bad habits, you will see them all across a particular strata of the Pakistani youth society. This made me wonder whether the Pakistani youth succumbs to an unusually large extent to Peer Pressure. Afterall, if you look at the number of guys smoking in colleges in Pakistan, you will notice that it is unusually high. In the developed world, smoking is almost considered 'disgusting', especially amongst the educated people who know about its health risks. However, if you notice in Pakistan, almost every 'popular' person (especially males)on campus smokes, and that also proudly in public places. I believe one of the reasons why smoking is become so widespread is because the youth is very frustrated. I've heard a lot of people smoking likea chimney saying that they are very stressed out and smoking helps them. It is also sad that our society never brings out the Islamic view on smoking, because its inconvenient because if not the person, one of his/her loved one smokes. Most religious scholars around the world agree that smoking is Makrooh.

Another popular myth seen amongst the youth is that sheesha is 1.Halal 2. Not addictive 3. Harmless! (trust me I’ve heard a lot ofpeople say there’s no harm smoking sheesha!). Firstly, most scholars agree that sheesha is Makrooh to say the least and even though it might not be as addictive as smoking, all my friends who smoke sheesha say that it is addictive. And to the last point, some of you might be surprised to know that SMOKING SHEESHA IS VERY HARMFUL – a 45 minute session of sheesha is like smoking a pack of cigarettes.

  1. quite true and very well pointed out by the author smoking definitely has the most adverse effects in every way! as it contributes to a number of cancers, Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain put on your body by smoking often causes years of suffering. Emphysema is an illness that slowly rots your lungs. People with emphysema often get bronchitis again and again, and suffer lung and heart cancer. Not only does smoking effect the person smoking but also the environment and people around them. In recent research it has been concluded that 2nd hand smokers are more affected by the smoke than first hand. so if you are in a car with your family and you smoke it effects ure husband/wife/children or whoever is with u more than it effects you.Pakistan has in several ways adopted things from western, and if it is i would suggest they adopt the law of no smoking indoors,so that whoever chooses to keep on smoking kills himelf only without affecting others!!!!

  4. henna... i have a simple question ...does Allah say in Quran that killing is wrong???? does it say in Quran its haram to hurt ureself or other individual( tatoos etc) if hurting ureself is haram killing a life is haram how can smoking not be haram????? Quran is there for us to learn from it and implement on life it wil not give direct answers like if i dont eat pig its haram but is it haram too if a certain thing has pig fat or not????this answer we all know but is it in Quran too that if a chocolate has a pig fat in it we cant have it???? no but we all know it is haram no??? anyway i dont want to get into much details all i have to say is...people who smoke donot love their families...very strong comment to pass indeed i know but if you die its your family that gets affected and if you dont care wht they will go through then im sorry nor there is any loving or caring for the family by that individual. Plus ALL GIRLS MUST KNOW!!!! there has been a recent research in which it was found out that if a girl smokes even 1ce in lifetime it affects her kids...i know at this people would say its during pregnancy...but no...its lifetime...if u as a girl smoke during or before pregnancy it affects your children...so you girls who eventually will become mothers 1 day and r smoking right now...jus think about ure unborn child atleast !!!!!

  5. Smokers have placed themselves in a bad position where they jeopardize both their health and self esteem as they are unable to resist such pleasures in the face of peer pressure and frustrations, however it is important to understand they are humans and sometimes better humans then some of us non-smokers. I feel that by placing a stigma on smokers and reminding them that they are "bad" will just make matters worse, confronting them and having accessible facilities to allow them to quit is what needs to be thought about. They need places and people they can go to without feeling this idea of being judged in order to stop the smoking culture.

  6. I do not know why we have to get Allah involved in EVERYTHING. Its quite simple....

The epidemic of tobacco use is one of the most wide spread and severe threats to global health. Approximately one-third of the world population use tobacco in some form or the other, half will die prematurely. World-wide 4.9 million people died in 2000 as a result of nicotine addiction4. According to WHO, tobacco is responsible for the death of about one in ten adults around the globe approximating to about 5 millions deaths each year. If this situation continues there will be yearly 10 million deaths by 2020. There are more than 1200 million currently smoking people worldwide, half of them will eventually
    be killed by tobacco.

In Pakistan, South Asia’s leading country in terms of smoking prevalence, as many as 273 persons die daily due to smoking-related diseases. The smoking epidemic in Pakistan is out of control because there are very few controls in place on the production and consumption end. There are few restrictions on promoting and marketing; there is no minimum age at point of sale; every tenth rupee that the government of Pakistan spends
    comes from tobacco revenues.

    GET MY DRIFT??!!!

The fact of the matter is that these are all hard facts...no judgment is being passed here. Just the simple truth about what smoking can potentially do to the smoker and the people around him/her. There are many other ways the youth and other can find a way to de-stress. How about some physical exercise as a means to de-stress??!!

All excuses about smoking are cop-outs. I recently quit smoking after 10 years of being a regular smoker. And I can safely say that all my excuses for not doing so earlier were a load of b***sh**. And going back to what HENNA and AZKA were talking about, its not a question of haram or makro or caring for family.......its a simple truth. Smoking kills...

And if some moron chooses to refute this fact by saying that eating too many cheese burgers and fries can potentially kill as well...well...your a moron with oversimplified logic....and not worth debating with :)
